What We Wear {Crop tops for when you’re old enough to know better!)

I remember the summer of 1990, and crop tops being a real ‘thing’.  I had this one that I was utterly obsessed with – cream and sheer with a little crochet trim on the bottom.  I wore it with high waisted jeans and black DM shoes and thought I was all the rage.  Fast forward to 2016 and I totally would have been, but I fear my twelve year old self was probably very uncool at the time.  It’s the great paradox of fashion, isn’t it, that the 90s are more ‘in’ now than they were in the actual 90’s. 😉

When the trend for shorter tops started to drift in last year, my first instinct was to steer well clear.  No one wants to see my post pregnancy tummy (I avoid it myself when I can!) and I think, to be honest, 37 is an age to draw a line in the sand when it comes to certain clothing choices (hotpants, boob tubes – remember those?! – and a good 70% of what you find in Topshop.   I operate on the basic principle that if Eva loves it, then I’m probably far too old for it! 🙂 )

But I’ve reconsidered lately and, I think if you wear them with the right things, they can maybe still look age appropriate, even in your 30s.  I’ll let you be the judge anyway!

My current collection (I have a collection.  When I embrace something, let it be known that I do it fully, you guys!) is Zara based and, teamed with high waisted jeans, skirts and summery shoes, they make for the perfect swishy, breezy Summer outfit.

A season that twelve year old Emma would have delighted in.  And proof that it maybe is still possible to wear it again, even if you do remember it the first time! 😉

I love all your tops – Zara is on fire this year! I’m a bit conscious of wearing short tops I feel much more comfortable in a long one. I’m 34 and still get the majority of clothes in Topshop though and I often do question – can I still pull this off after two kids!? You look lovely x

My 14 year old teenager is wearing now what did in the 99s (although I only dated wear crop tops on s night out not just as casual daytime attire!)
It’s nice to see fashion coming round – but nothing makes you feel older! I’d love to don a crop top once again but after 4 kids I think I might soon be stretchered off in a straight jacket lololol.
Beautifully elegant photos as always xxx

Looking lovely, Emma! And yes, you totally pull it off! Definitely all about avoiding the post pregnancy tummy… Mine will ever see the light of day again! Lol. But teamed with the right outfit, it definitely works! Love it! X
