What We Wear {The Summer Box}

Funny story.

I was taking pictures for this post earlier this week, during a particularly heavy hail storm, when the postman called at the door. He, decked out weather-appropriately in his woolly hat and coat, me, in shorts and a sun top. I wish I could have captured the look on his face.

Pretty sure he thinks I’m crazy. Or really optimistic.

If only the weather matched my mood!

I’m not too sure where I first heard of the idea of a Summer box, but I remember thinking at the time that it was pretty genius really. I think it appeals to the organiser in me – this notion of gathering up as you go, and buying piece by piece. I’ve been doing it for a while now, and it’s something I’ve applied to the kids’ wardrobes too. It really spreads the cost (especially when they all take those freaking growth spurts in sync!) and means that by the time the new season rolls around I’ve lots of pretty things stashed away.

I started getting bits for this year when the new season stock first rolled in in January (I know – way too early to be thinking about the Summer, but there’s that optimist again! 🙂 ) and I’ve found that it not only stops me buying silly things that I’ll never wear in the sales, but also ensures that when we get that one freak boiling day at the start of the season (where is this day?? I think it has done a runner this year!) I’ll be spoilt for choice.

Anyway, most of what I’m wearing is still available if you fancy starting your own box this season. You’ll find the links below.

*A quick note on body image and blogging about these sorts of things!

I’m definitely more in my comfort zone when it comes to the family side of blogging, but I love clothes (I really, really do!) and a friend recently challenged me to write a bit more on that side of things. I don’t proclaim to be any expert, and I’m no model, that’s for sure, but it’s all part and parcel of what makes me, me I guess. I feel awkward posing and am always really nervous about pictures without my little three, or Ern, to distract attention. That’s also part and parcel of me, and whilst I wish I could have that super confidence, I think it’s just one of those things that bypassed me in the talents department. 😉 Anyhow, that’s all a very longwinded way of saying, this is just me – the clothes I buy and the way I wear them. I’m blatantly aware of my flaws and, truth be told, they’re all I see when I look at pictures of myself, but my thirties have taught me to respect the body that serves me so well. To own it a bit more and dress in what makes me happy.

There are bigger and more important things in life, right?

And, let’s face it, our harshest critic is very often the one who stares back at us in the mirror.

I LOVE taking a peek into other people’s wardrobes (and usually end up wishing I could find such beautiful cloths to fit me!). Emma you look utterly gorgeous – the denim dress is my favourite. I live in black come rain or shine and you’ve inspired me to maybe try and look out some lighter ‘prettier’ shades for summer. Keep the posts like this coming 🙂 x

This post just makes me want to go on holidays… love all the summer clothes. I am really boring when it comes to clothes. I can’t wear white or very pale colours as I am so white myself. Then I get lots of freckles in the sun. While on holidays before I decided I would lie out at the pool to get a “tan”. I was there about two minutes when the pool attendant was over with a parasol/umbrella over me as he thought I’d burn. On another holiday I was walking down the corridor and one of the staff told me I was so pale, the whitest person they had ever seen!! And here was me rocking my shorts and thinking I had got a “tan” that day!! Oh well I will just have to wait until my freckles join together and then I’ll have a tan 🙂 Love all your outfits and don’t worry you look perfect in those photos.

      April 29, 2016 / 10:56 pm

Haha! My wee Noah is exactly the same with the sun. Such a freckle monster! I hover behind him with the SPF all holiday! ☺ Thank you so much xx

Ultrasun! Best sun cream ever, never irritates my children’s sensitive skin, the three in our family who tan still tan under Ultrasun factor 30 but never even go pink, me the freckly ginger never burns (I just don’t ever tan) and the best thing is it is genuinely a once a day application. No need to hover over the kids all day, or for me to keep reapplying on myself. Not cheap but really worth it.

Oh, thank you so much! I’m definitely going to get this for Summer hols! Really appreciate the recommendation! Xx

  8. April 29, 2016 / 7:34 pm

I loved this, the shots are so well taken and the clothes so classy. I tried on those sandals in M&s yesterday, and they were out of the jeans in that colour in my size so I was disappointed, now I want to go back and get both!

      April 29, 2016 / 10:58 pm

M&S shoes are the comfiest ever (that’s such an old lady thing to say isn’t it? ) They are though! Good luck with the ongoing search Sinead! Xx

I’m going to do a tutorial soon Rachel. I feel such a fraud as I just curl it and stick it in a ponytail, but I’ll try my best to make it look all fancy! xx

  10. April 29, 2016 / 9:08 pm

I love it all!! What you said about the pictures and body image is so lovely too. How I wish I could have found that windom that only comes with age, in my youth!! That’s life eh?! Gorgeous pics, gorgeous clothes and that banister and white painted door is making me want to crack on with decorating our landing!! Xx

I know Sue. I often think of that phrase ‘youth is wasted on the young’. It really is! I think I’ve just come to the realisation now that I have to treat my body with care – both in terms of what I put into it and also in the way I think of it. It has helped me grow three healthy babies and I kind of love it for that! ☺ xx

  11. April 29, 2016 / 9:34 pm

I’m not into clothes at all but have started buying clothes for our summer holiday and I am just so excited!

You are great at this sort of thing, and I see no flaws, I’m sad you needed the disclaimer but hopefully it will stop trolls trolling as some people have nothing better to do!

I have clicked lots of links and I’m off to go shopping! YAY for summer clothes! x

Hello, your outfits make me look forward to my hols in July. Love the denim dress, very much my kind of thing. I think we have similar proportions, so great inspiration for me. Please feel free to decline, but would you be willing to tell us your height, and possibly what size your dresses are? Would be really helpful in getting an idea of how they would work on me. Thank you!

    • Emma Martin
      April 29, 2016 / 11:10 pm

Of course Jennifer! I’m 5’8″ and a size 10. An 8 on top but I tend to be a 10 in dresses. I wear size Small in Zara tops and dresses. I hope that helps you! Happy Shopping! Xx

        April 29, 2016 / 11:50 pm

Thank you! I thought we had similar proportions and dimensions although you have two inches in height on me! Think I might go for that denim dress – did you go for an 8 or 10? Always a dilemma for me when something has a full skirt.

          April 30, 2016 / 10:59 am

I went for the 10 Jennifer. I probably could have got away with the 8 but wanted it a bit roomier for the heat on hols. I hope that helps you! Xx

Tried on the denim dress today and I love it – makes me look forward even more to our hols! The 10 is a perfect fit. Thanks for the inspiration.

  13. April 30, 2016 / 10:29 pm

Gorgeous! All of it. I think you could wear a burlap sack and still make it look awesome! lol! Roll on summer! My freckles are in desperate need of a top up, lol x

Hi. I too love the outfits you’ve put together. In fact I’ve been down a Lost Ink rabbithole as love the dress and top and have never heard of this brand before. I’d love the dress but need to wear a bra and can’t see how I would. What did you do?

    • Emma Martin
      May 6, 2016 / 8:34 am

I just went without. You can pull the ties in at the back to give more hold and the fabric is quite thick, so not see-through. Alternatively maybe a strapless one with a clear back strap? Xx
